The Future of Faith: Finding Your Place in the Church in the 21st Century

This spring we are excited to introduce what we hope will become an annual event at UNC: a symposium devoted to a single question of vital importance to the body of Christ, explored through keynote addresses, interviews, and group conversations.

This year’s question: “What church will we be part of in 25 years, and does it matter to be part of one at all?”

These are difficult questions. Popular media seeks to define evangelical Christianity as a largely political movement. Younger Christians are increasingly averse to joining churches at the local level. Thus, while Christians in the West are disassociating from the church or are seeking new ways to define it, the center of gravity for the church is solidifying in Africa and East Asia. When we look at our collective future, the question becomes: “What is our future in the global church?”

This year’s speakers and interviewers include Peter Greer (CEO of Hope International), Tish Harrison Warren (Christianity Today book award winner and minister), Molly Worthen (UNC faculty member and NYT op-ed writer), and several students and community members. Tish Harrison Warren will be speaking about what faithful Christianity looks like in America, and Peter Greer will help us to see how the body of Christ brings together the global church alongside active parachurch movements.

We hope that participants will leave having had the chance to ask questions and with a fresh perspective of God’s work in the church and beyond.

The day will run from 10:00am to 2:30 pm at Kenan-Flagler and the Kenan Center (which has free parking on Saturdays).

We’re grateful to Christ Central Church, Durham and UNC’s InterVarsity chapter for partnering with us on this event!
