2019 Parents Council Conference:
Faith, Mental Health + Loving Your College Student
This year, the NC Study Center hosted its first Parents Council Conference at the Battle House.
2019 Conference Overview
Our keynote speaker was Dr. Warren Kinghorn, Professor of Psychiatry and Pastoral Theology at Duke University. He discussed the mental health climate on today’s college campus and what that means for parents of college students. It was a stimulating time of encouragement, insight and fellowship among Carolina parents.
The first plenary address and audience discussion offered parents a comprehensive overview of the mental health issue on college campuses. The second address was titled: ‘It is Good that You Exist: On Being Loved by God in a World Marked by Shame.’ Students were welcome to join their parents for that one! We concluded by 12 p.m. to allow families time together with a chance to get to the Dean Dome to cheer the Tar Heels to victory over Florida State later that afternoon.
Dr. Warren Kinghorn is a psychiatrist whose work centers on the role of religious communities in caring for persons with mental health problems and on ways in which Christians engage practices of modern health care. Jointly appointed within Duke Divinity School and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences of Duke University Medical Center, he is co-director of the Theology, Medicine, and Culture Initiative and is a staff psychiatrist at the Durham VA Medical Center.
