This 6-week seminar will explore what made the early Church such a vibrant countercultural community within ancient Greco-Roman society. What were the distinct beliefs and practices that caused Christians to “stand out” among their neighbors? What did mission look like within the early Church? Most importantly, what can we learn from the early Church about living out our faith today? Join us for 6 weeks this spring as we read short selections from Acts and early Church Fathers to discover wisdom for 21st century Christians.

Alasdair MacIntyre’s After Virtue: A NC Study Center Reading Group
Why are contemporary debates about moral issues such as abortion, euthanasia, just war, and the administering of healthcare characterized by such shrillness and our perpetual inability to resolve them? In his landmark 1981 book After Virtue, Alasdair MacIntyre analyzes the state of our ethical discourse and laments that “there seems to be no rational way of securing moral agreement in our culture.” MacIntyre doesn’t leave the reader in despair though; he gives us a historical account of how and why our moral discourse deteriorated, as well as hope for how it can be restored.
