“Our continuing response to the reality of God’s grace shaping us into the likeness of Jesus Christ, through the work of the Holy Spirit, in the community of faith, for the sake of the world.”  Jeffrey Greenman

Approach

The North Carolina Study Center's Spiritual Formation Program is rooted in the completed work of Jesus Christ. Though the Holy Spirit is the primary agent in spiritual formation, we encourage and prepare students to collaborate with God’s Spirit in becoming more Christ like for the benefit of the world. Our program engages students' minds, hearts, souls, and strength. Through a number of opportunities, we equip students to live out their calling as God’s people in both their personal and academic lives, as well as within their vocations.

Offerings

Scripture & Biblical Theology

Through Scripture and Biblical theology, we provide students opportunities to encounter the Lord Jesus in his Word, develop biblical literacy and boost their confidence in reading Scripture independently. Our program includes exegetical Bible studies, encouraging students to dig deep into a biblical book, handle various biblical genres effectively, and also develop the ability to teach others.

Midday Prayer

We aim to cultivate lifelong prayer warriors among our students, with a desire for the Living God and a deep awareness of their dependence on Him. Through Midday prayer, a brief chapel-style service, students engage with Scripture, confess sins, praise Almighty God, and express timely thanksgivings, petitions, and intercessions. These services are designed to teach students how to pray, establish a rhythm of prayer and reflection throughout the week, and foster unity as they pursue a Christian education through the NCSC.

Reading & Discussion groups

Christians are called to put off the old (mortification) and to put on the new (vivification). Our reading and discussion groups provide opportunities for students to glean wisdom and practical insights from Christians who have gone before to learn what it looks like to live out their faith as transformed people.  We invite you to come and join in!

One2one discipleship/mentorship

Our staff and ministry partners meet regularly with students for one-2-one discipleship and mentoring. We walk alongside students to provide encouragement and support as they become lifelong followers of Jesus Christ. We accept Dietrich Bonhoeffer's view that discipleship simply means "joy," and we consider it a joy and a privilege to journey with students as they embrace the Way of Christ in Chapel Hill.
